Mickey Mouse Mosaic Using Stained Glass

Mickey Mouse Mosaic

I have always loved Stained Glass and Mosaic since I was a little girl. I have been recently working a few mosaics, but this one is my favorite.

I decided to make this Mickey Mouse for my grandson, he loves Mickey right now. I had thought about doing a stained glass piece but I didn’t want the lines on his face. I cut the face and ears as one piece and that’s when I decided this is going to have to be a mosaic, so the fun begins.

I used Hardiboard for my substrate, which comes from Home Depot, so I cut approximately 24 x 24 and started the layout and the cutting of the rest of Mickey’s body. The lettering I purchased from Michaels, Boy I love that place After gluing Mickey down it was time to cut the stars and smaller blue pieces. I added the 5 stars because I plan to take him to Disney when he is 5, I am excited about that already.

The eyes, nose and buttons are GOG (glass on glass) to make them stand out a bit. Now time to cut the background pieces. It took a little extra work using my nippers to cut the blue pieces, something I had to get use to.  As soon as I got the knack of it cutting the size and shapes I wanted there was no stopping me. Below is an in process photo. Read more »

Stained Glass Mosaic Candle Holder

july 2015 upload 167

Hi everyone, I am back. I know I have been out of touch for awhile but its been a busy year so far. I was out of commission with my back again, but hopefully that is over with it sure interferes with my Stained glass and Mosaic projects.

The past month or so I have been very busy trying to get back in the swing of things so I should have a few things to post about. I just completed this awesome Stained Glass Mosaic candle holder approximately 7.5 x 7.5 x 7.5. I am so excited about this one I will definitely be making more of these for Christmas gifts this year. I just love this piece I was making it for a gift but now thinking I may have to keep it for myself.

These candle holders are fun to make. I cut all the glass with my saw (sure glad I have that) and grinded the edges down smoothly. I glued the pieces on with the E6000 clear glue, the flowers on all four sides are from the jewelry section at Michaels.  I used the pre mixed grout (Black) from Home Depot. After all the grout clean up and allowed to dry for a day or so I sealed the grout and added some shiny varnish. The varnish part was a bit tricky for me because I got it on the glass, pretty messy of me. The varnish on the glass is not easy to get off if you let it dry on there. So lessons learned for me lol don’t be so messy with the varnish. These can also be made for purchase upon request.  That’s it for now I have to go make something else. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Mosaic Picture Frame

I am starting to really like doing Mosaic, pretty soon I will be making something big. I had a hard time deciding the grout color, I started with a tan color but didn’t like it to much so I had to stain the grout. I think I am getting a handle on it though. I made this picture frame in a couple of days for my daughter hope you like it as much as I do. Maybe one day I can start selling some commissioned items.

My First Mosaic Using Stained Glass

Mosaic 1

I have just completed my first Mosaic and am very excited to share this with others, hope you like it. The project took me about a week because I kept changing my mind on what design I wanted. I found the mirror at a garage sale for 2 dollars and thought this will be the perfect mirror to try my first mosaic on. All of my glass was left over pieces from previous stained glass projects, what a way to use your scrap glass. The photo’s below show what the mirror looked like when I purchased it and in process through the final grouting,  please ignore the person in the mirror. All the glass and edges had to be masked so when I was ready to grout it wouldn’t get on the mirror.

Next was to draw the design on the frame, I am not a very good artist so that was a bit difficult, but I made it through with determination. Next I cut all the pieces and laid them in place. Looking pretty good by then so I carry on with the next step which was to start gluing all of them down (I used Glass Metal and More glue by Beacon adhesives) and applying the grout (Simple grout). The glue and grout both came from Home Depot premixed, which I like very much. Final drying time was 48 hours. This grout also comes in different colors, I chose the grey to match my decor.  The only thing left was to clean up the the entire piece with a sponge, clean all the edges and finally clean the glass. I am very happy with this first Mosaic project, I hope you also will enjoy viewing this piece. I will have to do some more of these little projects, to share with my family and friends.
